United
Way Ghana, a non-profit organization focused on advancing the common good
and creating opportunities for a good quality life in the areas of education,
income generation, and health, has
rebranded the Akropong Scholarship fund, an educational support fund, to
Nyansapo Scholarship scheme.
United Way Ghana, with support from Mr. &Mrs
Reid developed the Akropong Scholarship fund to help provide scholarships for
some selected needy but brilliant pupils in the Akropong community. The
Scholarship package includes School bags, school uniforms, shoes, and
stationery. Currently, more than 450 children have benefited from the
scholarship project since its inception in 2005.
United Way Ghana, in partnership with Global Media
Alliance, will be officially launching the rebranded scheme nationwide. Explaining
how selection will be done to put some of these deprived kids through school,
(name and designation), made it clear that the package is for kids in the
Primary and Junior Secondary Schools. She said ‘UWG selects scholarship
recipients based on academic performance, financial need, and interest in
school. These three criteria carry percentages of 40, 40, and 20, respectively
to selecting beneficiaries.’ Lorraine Osewele, Executive Director for United
Way Ghana, added that School heads and teachers will be involved in the process
of selecting beneficiaries. He assured transparency in the process and concluded
that ‘in order to ensure our goal is achieved, we are expanding this program to
reach brilliant but needy children in all the regions of Ghana’.
According to Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, Managing Director
of Global Media alliance, ‘many are the children in rural communities who have
been deprived of basic education. It is pathetic when you visit some of these
villages and realize that brilliant kids who are at the stage of having access
to quality basic education are just wandering about, or assisting parents at
work because of financial obstacles. At Global Media Alliance, it is one of our
core objectives to effect change in the society we are operating in thus, our
partnership with United Way Ghana to help deprived but brilliant kids have
access to quality basic education. We pledge our support to United Way Ghana
and we look forward to helping as many as we can on this excellent initiative’.
