The
secretary of Ghana Golf Association, Lee Mensah says golf as a
discipline should not be viewed as a preserve of the wealthy and well to
do in the society and called on the public to disabuse their minds of
this notion so as to promote the sport and develop the youth in the
playing of golf across the country. He made this known in an interview
during the 23rd Goil Seniors Amateur Open Golf Championship at Nsuta in the Western region
It
was spectacular at Nsuta Golf course where the old folks and the youth
displayed their wonderful skills in an open golf tournament. The serene
nature of the pitch and the general environment was welcoming to
stimulate and stir the fever of golf. The three hour tourney saw
participants from achimota, obuasi, tarkwa, Kumasi, nsuta and other
parts of the country competiting for honors at the 23rd
Goil Seniors Amateur Open Golf Championship at Nsuta. Some of these
golfers who were having fun were treated to some of the popular local
tunes as some were in a chatty mood nodding their heads in total joy.
At the end of the tourney S.K. Nartey from Obuasi golf club was adjudged
the overall winner of the handicap competition all other deserving
participants were presented with trophies and petroleum products from
GOIL, the title sponser of the golf tourney, by the president of Ghana
Golf Association, Dr. Felix Frimpong, the Managing Director of the Ghana
Manganese Company, Mr. Jurgen and the Corporate Affairs manager of
Goil Cyril Oppong, Speaking with the secretary of the Ghana Golf
Association, Lee Mensah, hinted that a notion has been created that,
Golf playing is only meant for the rich and persons of high class in the
society. This he said is rather unfortunate perception created around
the game.
He
said a systematic attempt is being made to rope in the youth at the
second cycle level into the game he however entreated the youth to be of
good behavior and observe the rules of the golf discipline through this
they can get sponsors.
The
Corporate Affairs Manager of GOIL Cyril Oppong said the rational behind
the over eight sponsorship of the senior golf tourney is part of their
corporate social responsibility.
