Vodafone Healthline gave my daughter a new lease of life

Elizabeth Owusu, mother of 15 years old Millicent Osei Bonsu, from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region who was missing out on Senior High School (SHS) due to scoliosis, a curved spine condition, is grateful for the intervention of the award winning television programme, Healthline.
Millicent developed the medical condition at the age of 13 and had since been living with excruciating back pain which made it difficult for her to sit for long hours. Her mother, who is a trader at Kumasi Central Market, was very worried about how she would raise money for the surgery, and most importantly how Millicent was going to write her Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE).
Her mother tried to raise funds for the surgery and got GHC 5,000 through her church in Abrepoh, Kumasi. This was still woefully inadequate and could not cater for the full cost of surgery her daughter needed.
“I was particularly worried about her education when she developed the problem. She was always in so much pain and I was troubled about how she was going to learn and write her BECE. My daughter would not have been able to continue her education but for the support of Vodafone Healthline”.
One year on, Millicent is doing remarkably well. She had good grades at the BECE and is now in her second year at the Kumasi Girls High School, offering General Arts with the hope of becoming a nurse in future.
Millicent is one of the many lives that have been transformed by Vodafone Ghana’s multiple award winning programme, Healthline. It remains the most awarded Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in Ghana and continues to empower Ghanaians on health related issues. The programme sponsors people in need of urgent surgical operations and also educates Ghanaians on various health issues.

Scoliosis, according medical experts is abnormal condition that develops in children during puberty.

However, the two entertainment journalists were split on who will headline this year’s event. “I would love to see Usher, BeyoncĂ© or Rihanna perform,” says Ameyaw.

Samsung Redefines Flexibility in Kitchen with New Four Door Smart Refrigerator

Samsung Electronics West Africa has announced its expanded line-up of premium home appliance for the kitchen,  the four-door T9000 Smart Refrigerator that bring unmatched ease of use, convenience, organization and style to the kitchen.
"As the world’s fastest growing appliance brand, Samsung's award-winning products deliver the flexibility that busy families not only need in the ki

tchen, but also want," said Richard Nunekpeku, Marketing Manager for Consumer Electronics at Samsung Ghana. "Our latest four-door smart refrigerator with unsurpassed fresh food storage will transform the storing food and drinks at home easier and more fun."
“The T9000 smart refrigerator which is the world’s largest provides 819L storage capacity.  The 543L fridge and 276L freezer is designed to enable consumers store all sizes and all kinds of foods, enriching their eating lifestyle without having to worry about available fridge space when purchasing groceries or food stuff”. Richard added. “The wide space of the fridge compartment allows consumers to store and take them out without shuffling around food items. It takes you less effort to store heavy frozen food by storing them into the low-height freezer.
In addition to being flexible and stunningly beautiful, this refrigerator also performs. To help ensure optimal temperature and humidity control, as well as performance in each of the fresh food zones, the T9000 has Samsung's Triple Cooling system. This unique cooling technology ensures that commercial grade humidity levels are maintained in the fresh food compartments with the help of two compressors, three evaporators and an array of sensors to keep produce fresher longer.
According the Richard, Separate cooling system maintains optimum temperature for each of the three compartments while giving consumers the opportunity regulate each compartment independently. Also, the separate cooling compartment does not allow odour to be transferred, keeping the original freshness.
Speaking on the premium luxury design Richard said the T9000 has a timeless design that will never lose its value of beauty even if the design trend changes. The smooth silver contoured body and real metal handle raises value to redefine luxury and elegance in your kitchen.
“Using 13 Smart Sensors, the T900  monitor internal and external temperature, maintaining optimal freshness inside.” Richard said. During the day when a user opens the door frequently and external temperature is high, compressor increases its speed to cool down internal temperature. And compressor runs slowly at the night when temperature is low, humidity is high, and door opening frequency is low and in effect saves energy and money. It also has the LCD CoolSelect Plus that delivers four pre-set optimum temperature settings. By selecting the pre-set temperature, you can keep items fresher, longer and in optimal temperatures.
The T9000 Smart Refrigerator has a unique internal design to optimize the store of all your food stuff and other groceries. With foldable and easy slide shelves, adjustments can always be made to make room for all items irrespective of the size. The to adjust for huge guards and counter crispers also allows the consumer to keep fruits and vegetables conveniently and also remove without bending. Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic Airways Announce New Summer Schedule

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. today outlined details of a new joint venture flight schedule beginning summer 2014, aligning their services and offering more flight choices for travellers on both sides of the Atlantic.
The two airlines are putting the customer at the forefront of their partnership with the new schedule that starts March 30, 2014, combining their slots at London Heathrow to offer maximum customer convenience, particularly for business travellers.
Beginning, April 2, 2014, Delta will move its arrival and departure terminal for several important business markets to join Virgin Atlantic in Heathrow Terminal 3. This includes its London to New York-JFK, London to Boston, and new London to Seattle services and means the two airlines will co-locate on all New York and Boston flights to London Heathrow. The move will allow for convenient connections and a seamless customer experience for customers flying with Virgin and Delta, including access to Virgin Atlantic’s award winning Clubhouse for all business class passengers.
“We are working on a series of improvements to enhance the travel experience for our customers,” said Craig Kreeger, Virgin Atlantic’s CEO. “We already co-locate together at New York’s JFK airport and moving some of Delta’s key business flights to join Virgin Atlantic at Heathrow’s Terminal 3 will enhance convenience, and reduce connection times. This demonstrates how our new partnership is going to be making a real difference for customers.”
Delta, in co-operation with Virgin Atlantic, will also operate a second daily service between London Heathrow and Detroit Metropolitan Airport effective June 2, 2014. The service will be particularly appealing to corporate customers needing an early morning arrival into London while offering more schedule choice for customers between London and the U.S. Midwest.
This additional flight will complement Delta’s previously announced new West Coast route between Seattle and London Heathrow, which will launch on March 30, 2014.
Virgin Atlantic is also making significant schedule changes. It is moving its VS1 Heathrow to Newark service from a late afternoon departure to a morning departure. This flight will be particularly attractive to business travellers: it will allow ‘same-day meetings’ to be held in the New Jersey area, while an earlier departure on the return flight means passengers can be in central London for the start of the working day.
This service is part of nine daily flights between London Heathrow and the New York area by the joint venture partners. The new schedule will include departures every 30 minutes during the early evening peak and then hourly until 10.30 p.m. from New York-JFK to London Heathrow and a spread of seven daily flights from London Heathrow to New York-JFK, including two late afternoon and early evening departures.  It also includes two conveniently timed departures to and from Newark.
Virgin Atlantic has also retimed its Heathrow to Boston service to depart two hours later in the afternoon. This offers more flexibility for the two airlines’ customers with Delta’s Heathrow to Boston service departing in the morning. Virgin Atlantic’s evening departure from Boston will also move two hours later, giving greater schedule choice to travellers.
“A key reason for our joint venture was to offer customers more choice and convenient schedules, especially for our business travellers,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s president. “With our Seattle service, Delta will add its sixth nonstop destination between London and the United States. Combined the Delta-Virgin partnership now offers our customers 33 daily nonstop flights across the Atlantic.”
In September Delta and Virgin Atlantic welcomed the decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to approve the carriers’ joint venture by granting antitrust immunity on routes between North America and the UK. This ruling confirmed the clear consumer benefits of the partnership, enabling the airlines to deepen their cooperation, offering more flight choices for travellers on both sides of the Atlantic and improving the travel options for business customers in the New York to London market.
The airlines’ customers benefit from a high-quality and complementary travel experience with passenger service being an absolute priority for both airlines. For the business traveller Delta and Virgin Atlantic’s business class uniquely includes forward-facing fully flat-bed seats, all with direct aisle access on every flight.

Communication on KNUST campus made easy with Vodafone Ghana’s MNotify

A group of App developers at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and members of the Vodafone Tech Hub, Ghana’s first technology and innovation center, have built a web-based SMS notification platform to assist the University authorities communicate with students.Known as M-notify, the platform allows the administrators of the University to send targeted messages to the entire student base and various groups using unique sender ID. Information on registration as well as critical and urgent security alerts are all now communicated to students using M-notify.

Following poor attendance to one of their Computer Science meetings, Godwin Amefia and Ronald Tagoe, both third year students identified communication gaps and thought about the web-based SMS notification platform as a solution.

Commenting on the application, the Dean of Students at the KNUST, Dr. Kofi Owusu-Daakuwas grateful to Vodafone Ghana for supporting ‘Paperless Communication’ in the University. He explained, “Sharing information with students is now more effective and cheaper; as we are able to reach the entire students base via SMS in less than five minutes. We are also able to share information quickly with specific student groupings in Departments, Faculties and Colleges about meetings, changes in calendar events, venues etc. This system has virtually come to replace the era of paper advertisements which had scarred, defaced our edifices and littered our grounds.”

The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Prof W.O. Ellis, is particularly proud the innovative solution was developed by students of KNUST; for him that is what a University of Science & Technology should all be about.  “In line with our innovative vision, Vodafone is providing each student access to 3600Mb data, 2400 minutes Vodafone to Vodafone calls and 960 text messages in a year all for less than 10 pesewas a day.  It should improve security as students can support each other in emergency situations; and also call security hotlines.”

The Head of Strategy and Innovation for Vodafone Ghana, Julius Owusu-Kyerematen is hopeful the unique partnership between Vodafone and KNUST will continue to develop to the mutual advantage of both institutions. “The Vodafone Tech Hub on KNUST campus provides a unique environment where like-minded and focused technology entrepreneurs meet, network and collaborate. It is a win-win for both KNUST and Vodafone Ghana because we are both passionate about innovation and creativity,” he emphasized.

Vodafone Ghana furnished the Tech Hub and provided the equipment including servers, computers, smart phones and internet connectivity about a year ago, giving students a chance to translate their knowledge from class into tangible results.
